这首歌的来历： Scarborough Fair原是一首古老的苏格兰民间谜歌（riddle song），所谓“riddle song”是指那些民间流传广泛，但是不知道作者是谁的歌曲，而且由于人们的相互传唱，本来的曲调已经改变了很多。后来英国民歌手马汀·卡西（Martin Carthy）在原歌的基础上加进了自己的再创造（尤其是里面那优美的吉它伴奏），把它变成了一首非常优美的爱情歌曲。保罗曾于64－65年期间在英国度假，并经常出没于英国民谣圈演唱，学会这首歌后，重新谱写了词曲。

Scarborough Fair这首歌第一次为我们所知应该是作为美国电影《毕业生》（The Graduate）的插曲出现的'。这部电影是当时美国大学生很喜欢的电影，这首歌曲和那首The Sound of Silence（寂静之声）也都是颇受欢迎的。其实，西蒙和加芬克尔的唱片专辑“Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme”是在1966年底问世的。电影《毕业生》是1967年上映的，吸纳了其中两首作为插曲。
